People of Faith Against the Death Penalty
PFADP is a faith-based national death penalty abolition group based in Carrboro, NC, that has deep roots in the Binkley community. It is the only organization of its kind based in the South, where 95 percent of executions take place. The mission of PFADP is to educate and mobilize faith communities to act to abolish the death penalty in the United States.
PFADP’s members include Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, and people from other faith traditions from across the United States. PFADP believes that the God of all faiths calls us to a high and often difficult standard of love and forgiveness and to a justice that is rooted not in retribution but rather in redemption and restoration. The death penalty raises questions both of the soul and of public policy, and their answers must be discussed, discerned and resolved in communities of faith, or they will be left unresolved in our temples and sanctuaries as much as in our courtrooms and legislative chambers.
In the local Chapel Hill-Carrboro community, PFADP has had every local government and more than 100 local churches, businesses and community groups to call for a moratorium on executions. Scores of PFADP members have taken action against the death penalty locally and in the North Carolina legislature. In 2010, PFADP will sponsor a national conference in Atlanta on religious organizing for repeal of the death penalty.
Members of Binkley have been involved in the leadership of PFADP since it was founded in 1994. Stephanie Phillippi is a past president of PFADP and Robert Seymour, Elise Goldman, Tom Fewel and others from the Binkley community have served on PFADP’s board of directors. Kristen Smith is PFADP’s development director. PFADP’s major annual award is named after Robert Seymour, Binkley Pastor Emeritus.
