Some of the intergenerational traditions Binkley enjoys:
Launch Sunday: This annual event takes place the Sunday after Labor Day. On Launch Sunday, we return to the regular programs of the church, following the summer break. There is Early Worship at 8:30 in the Lounge, an opening assembly for Church School at 9:30 in the Sanctuary, and Worship there at 11:00. Second-graders are presented with a Good News Bible, which has special significance to many. A potluck lunch follows Worship. It is a wonderful occasion to reconnect with one another and to rekindle the spirit of learning and growth!
Church-Wide Picnic: In late September, at the beginning of the Christian Formation year at Binkley, we celebrate with a picnic at a local park. It's a delightful time to relax, meet old friends and make new, and enjoy a meal outdoors!
All Hallow's Eve Party: Children of all ages are welcome to enjoy an evening of fun on the Tuesday or Wednesday closest to Halloween and All Saint's Day. In addition to games, bobbing for apples, a costume contest, and crafts--the 4th/5th graders bring saints from the past "to life" through a dramatic sharing.
Hanging of the Greens, with Crafts: On a Sunday afternoon early in December, Binkley starts off the Christmas season right! People of all ages spend time making crafts to keep and to share, followed by a short service near the Chrismon tree, a chili supper, and caroling to homebound members and nursing home residents. Come for your favorite parts, or for the entire wonderful "moveable feast."
Christmas: In December, the children lead in worship by reenacting the nativity of Christ. That same December morning, the last Church School meeting of the year shares an intergenerational breakfast to welcome the Christ Child. On Christmas Eve, a family-focused worship service is offered in addition to two other services of lessons and carols.
Lent and Easter: This season of the year provides more opportunities for the church community to gather. We joyfully gather for Shrove Tuesday Pancakes and Talent Show. The next day, a family-focused worship service is offered in addition to the Ash Wednesday evening service. During Holy Week, Binkley sponsors with area congregations a Labyrinth in our sanctuary. People of all ages come to walk, watch and pray. In place of church school, we joyfully resurrect the Alleluias during a scrumptious Easter Breakfast.
Game and Movie Nights: Periodically during the year, all ages are welcomed to enjoy a Friday evening of fun, playing board games, munching on pizza and potluck desserts. For Movie Night, a film for adults/youth is offered, and children see their own video or DVD, with supervised care.
Binkley Church-Wide Retreat: Also, each summer, a church-wide retreat is held over a weekend at a conference or retreat setting. Children, youth, and adults enjoy a leisurely time that includes worship, singing, skits, and family-friendly workshops.
