Gay, Lesbian, Bi-Sexual, Transgender Issues
Binkley Baptist Church is a Welcoming and Affirming Church. Baptists use this term to identify churches that welcome lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) individuals and allies for full inclusion in the life of their churches. Binkley is one of seven members of the Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists (AWAB) in North Carolina. Listed below are some of the advocacy groups addressing the social, political, spiritual, and health challenges facing LGBTQ individuals in our community.
EqualityNC: EqualityNC’s professionals, interns, donors and volunteers work to secure equal rights and justice for LGBT people by lobbying the NC General Assembly, the executive branch, and local governments on LGBT issues. These issues include inclusive anti-bullying policies, employment discrimination, hate violence, privacy rights, sexuality education, adoption, domestic partnerships, and HIV/AIDS. www.equalitync.org
Human Rights Campaign: With more than 750,000 members, the HRC is the largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans. HRC's religion and Faith Program mobilizes people of faith to advocate for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. Each February the HRC organizes a local Annual Human Rights Campaign Gala in the Triangle. www.hrc.org
Association of Welcoming & Affirming Baptists: Members of the Association of Welcoming & Affirming Baptists (AWAB) are churches, organizations, and individuals who are willing to go on record as welcoming and affirming all persons without regard to sexual orientation or gender identity, and who have joined together to advocate for the full inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons within Baptist communities of faith. Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG): PFLAG promotes the health and well-being of gay, lesbian and transgender person, their families and friends, through support, education, and advocacy.” www.pflagtriangle.org
