One family in five in the United States is affected by serious mental illness. This adds up to 8 million people in our nation, many of whom are not being provided with the treatments they need. The economic cost of untreated mental illness in the United States is more than 100 billion dollars each year. These statistics are true despite the fact that the best treatments for serious mental illnesses today are highly effective. Treatment works if you can get it, but many just cannot get it. Many families tell stories of how hard it is to get access to the care they need. If you are poor, it is even harder. NAMI Orange County (The National Alliance on Mental Illness) supports persons with mental illness, their families and their friends, provides education about severe brain disorders, fights stigma, and advocates for a continuum of high quality mental health care services. NAMI supports increased funding for research, adequate health care, housing, rehabilitation and jobs for people with serious psychiatric illnesses.
