LENTEN ACTIVITIES AT BINKLEY  printer

SHROVE TUESDAY PANCAKE SUPPER & TALENT SHOW, FEB 21
The Binkley Youth look forward to hosting, entertaining and feeding you at this fabulous fellowship hall event. The Talent Sign-up sheet for all ages is located on Dale’s bulletin board. If you can sing, juggle, tell jokes or conduct a science experiment please sign up. The event is a wonderful opportunity for you to have a lot of fun with a wide variety of Binkley members and friends. The cost for the meal (pancakes, sausage, beverages and fruit) is $6.00 for 6th grade and above, $5.00 for 5th grade and below with a $25.00 HOusehold maximum. Net proceeds from the meal will support youth in need of scholarships for Baptist Youth Camp. The meal starts at 5:45 pm. Join us!

DISCIPLESHIP CLASS FOR BINKLEY YOUTH: This year’s class will take place on Tuesday nights from 5:45 – 7:15 pm. All 7th-9th grade youth will receive a letter detailing the class structure. The class will begin with supper and move into questions about Christianity, joining a faith community like Binkley Baptist Church through baptism or confirmation, following the teachings of Jesus and building a stronger sense of support among your peers. The class will run for 6 weeks beginning on February 28. We will finish the class in April. Contact Dale Osborne or Peter Carman with your questions.

ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICES FEB 22
: On Ash Wednesday at Binkley we have two types of services where you may worship God and receive ashes on your hand or forehead.  The first opportunity is an intimate gathering of two families at a time scheduled in fifteen minute segments beginning at 5:00 pm on February 22.  Dale Osborne leads the children and parents in a time of dialogue, song and prayer as well as an explanation of the ashes.  Please sign up on the sheet on Dale’s door by Tuesday night at the Pancake Supper.  This gathering will occur in our beautiful chapel.  The second opportunity for a more formal service of ashes takes place in the sanctuary at 7:30 pm.  Peter  Carman and the Chancel Choir provide       leadership for this worship time.  Singing, scripture readings, prayer, special music and the placement of ashes are incorporated into the gathering.  We encourage you to take part in this service which prepares us for the season of Lent.

LENTEN SUPPER SERIES: The Adult Education Team of the Christian Formation  Committee will sponsor a Lenten Series, beginning Wednesday, February 29th and meeting weekly from 5:30-7:00 p.m. through March 28th. We’ll gather for supper in the Fellowship Hall and then move to the Library for the presentation and discussion. The theme for these 5 weeks is Simplicity, a value deeply associated with Lent, as we seek to live out the Gospel message in a culture driven by consumption. A light soup supper will be served for $4.00; childcare will be available from 6:00-7:00 p.m. Join us for fellowship around the table and a dynamic conversation that gets at the heart of what it means to “walk the talk.”

BINKLEY-BARBEE'S BIANNUAL YARD SALE AUGUST 18, 2012  printer

BINKLEY-BARBEE'S CHAPEL 2012 YARD SALE: The Church Council, at its December 16 meeting, approved a motion to conduct a yard sale in cooperation with Barbee's Chapel. The tentative date is set for Saturday, August 18. The success of this much-anticipated community event will depend entirely on the congregations' willingness to volunteer their time and 'treasures.' The most immediate need is for volunteers to step forward to lead in organizing the yard sale. Joy Wood, Tom Fewel and Carole Stevens have prepared a very helpful guide to the entire process and have offered to assist the leader(s) of this year's yard sale in planning the event. So, we invite new and old members and attendees of Binkley to be a part of this great opportunity to serve the church and the entire community through the funds raised in the always-amazing Binkley Yard Sale! Call or e-mail Charles Coble at 919-619-0261, ccoble2@nc.rr.com, or let any of the ministers know of your interest.

SMALL GROUPS AT BINKLEY  printer

NEW SMALL GROUPS….WHAT’S HAPPENING.  If you are looking for a way to get to know others at Binkley, as well as make connections in faith and life—we invite you to sign up outside the Christian Ed office, or by emailing Stephanie Ford:  stephanie@binkleychurch.org

•      Movie-Night Group. Here is a chance to join others in the Binkley community in seeing a local film once a month, followed by conversation over coffee. Ashley Nissler is the contact person, and even if you can only come occasionally, you are most welcome. Ashley’s email is ranissler@mindspring.com

•    Faith Issues Group. Are there questions about faith that keep tugging at you?
Are you looking for a place to talk about how your beliefs work in our complex world?  Join Jan Clark and Peter Carman in the Lounge at 12:20 for appetizers and conversation about the group’s particulars.

•    Mostly Music. Billy and Ann Barnes, and Peter Carman will host an informal once-a-month opportunity to share songs, both sacred and secular. Bring an instrument if you have one. Meetings are at 7:00 p.m.  on Tuesdays, Feb 28, Mar 27, Apr 24 and May 22, in the Pocket Rooms near the Fellowship Hall.

Of course, there are small or medium-sized groups already flourishing in and around Binkley, such as the Wednesday morning prayer group, Veni Spiritus (on Thursday evenings), Sermon-Shaping on Tuesday afternoons, Prime Timers monthly, daytime and Friday evening book groups, Brainstormers, and Health Ministries. Please feel free to call and ask about any of these ongoing opportunities. If you have an idea for starting a group, we are eager to hear your vision.

Thanks, Stephanie Ford and the Christian Formation Committee

WEDNESDAY MORNING PRAYER: We gather in the Chapel every Wednesday from 9:00-9:45 am for Centering Prayer. The time begins with a reading from Scripture or other devotional material, followed by 20-30 minutes of silence. The final 15 minutes is a time for prayer, both spoken and silent, when participants bring their expressions of thanksgiving and concern before God. It also includes a reading of the names of Binkley members who are on the prayer list. A unison praying of the Lord's Prayer concludes the time. For details, contact Nancy Cheek, 967-4348, cheekn@earthlink.net, or Velma Ferrell,  493-2066, velmamferrell@nc.rr.com.
