Binkley Church

Binkley Church has a tradition of active involvement by members of our congregation in all aspects of church life. In being a part of this tremendous community of people, you have the opportunity to help out in many different ways, from caring for preschoolers during worship services to watering plants in the sanctuary to coordinating our “lending library” of gently used home medical assistance equipment. All talents are needed: tell us what you can do, and we’ll find a place that fits your skills and your interests. You might discover talents you didn't even know you had!

Following are descriptions of the various areas committees of volunteer opportunities at Binkley Church, as well as some primary tasks for each one. Please check off individual tasks that you have an interest in, and then use the end of this form to tell us a little about your skills and experience. We’ll do our best to match you with the part of our community that can put your talents to their best use.

I would like to help with reviewing and archiving Binkley church historical materials for safekeeping.

Our church building often craves maintenance by way of light bulbs, leaky faucets, broken chairs, etc..

I can serve on the Building Maintenance committee.

BU committee determines policies and procedures for outside groups, provides oversight for all external users of the church, and facilitates all aspects of how our building is used and the group usage impact on the church. Meets on an as-needed basis, but communicates frequently by email.

CHILDCARE

The Communications committee meets every 3rd Sunday after worship, and is aimed with informing the community about Binkley and inviting more people to join our church. Includes brochure development, and advertising in and out of the church.

I can serve on the Communications committee.

Earth Ministries is concerned about the earth and works from a faith perspective on enviornmental issues. Meets on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 7:30 pm.

I can serve on the Earth Ministries committee.

Fellowship committee works with other committees at Binkley to plan and host the major social events of the year, as well as special receptions or luncheons. Members set up, serve, and clean up after church gatherings, and take care of the church kitchen.

I can serve on the Fellowship committtee.

I can organize small-groups events.

I can assist in the set-up/clean-up for events.

I can perform kitchen maintenance.

The Finance committee reviews financial issues, makes recommendations on expenditures, assists in the budget process, conducts internal audits, and fills in if "counters" are needed.

Caring for our church property is a labor of love and commitment. Plan on getting your hands dirty in God's rich earth.

Plans and coordinates spiritual and health-related activities within teh church, including the Healing and Prayer Services. Also provides health promotion info; loans medical equipment; provides prayer shawls; and sends cards to those with health challenges.

This is a group of Binkley members and people from 24 other faith communities and 13 non-profits and neighborhood groups who work for power and sustainable social change in Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Orange County, especially for low-income folks.

I would like to participate with Justice United.

Welcomes new members and potential members to Binkley.

I can serve on the Membership committee.

I can write notes to visitors.

I can photograph new members.

I can be a "Fellowship Friend" to a new member or visitor.

I can assist with the Welcome Table before or after worship.

In concert with the Minister of Music, this committee oversees the Music program, and supports the Binkley community in worship, individuals who participate in making music, and the wider community through music outreach events such as concerts.

I plan to sing in the choir for the 2010-2011 year.

I would like a call about how I might serve through Binkley's music program: serving on the Music committee, singing/playing solos in worship, participating in an instrumental, handbell, dance or drama ensemble, assisting with concerts, etc..

The admin office occasionally needs volunteers for folding or office coverage.

Our church strives to walk in the servant model Jesus taught his disciples. The Board of Outreach oversees the annual outreach budget, and provides opportunities for education and action.

I can serve on the Outreach committee.

I can volunteer at the Inter-Faith Council.

I can be a CROP Walk organizer.

I can serve on the Brazil team.

I can help with HABITAT projects.

I can work with Baptist Peace Fellowship of North America.

Peace and Justice Action seeks to repsond to the call of Christ to pursue peace and work for justice, supporting individuals and groups, and creating opportunities for congregation-wide focus on local and global issues.

I can serve on Peace and Justice Action.

This is a shared partnership with Barbee's Chapel Harvest Word Church, meeting monthly to discuss issues of common concern, plan joint worship, study and work on outreach projects.

I would like to be a part of the Racial Reconciliation group.

Help Binkley to be as green as possible in the management of our disposables.

I can pick up Binkley recyclables weekly and take them to the nearest recycling center.

This team helps acclimate newly arrived refugees to life in the US and Chapel Hill. There are numerous areas in which assistance is needed.

I can help with transportation.

I can help with tutoring.

I can help with financial advice and management.

I can help with securing furnishings, clothing, etc.

I can help with other day-to-day needs.

Stewardship designs and carries out a program of devotionals and information to encourage Binkley members and friends to make a financial pledge commitment to support our church. Committee duties include writing articles, speaking about the importance of financial support for the church, developing devotional materials citing use of church money, and attending committee meetings.

I can serve on the Stewardship committee.

Binkley's universe of sound systems, computers and internet connections needs precision attention, dedication and tender loving care. If you have technical skills in these areas, please join us.

This committee assists the ministers with artistic, musical and liturgical aspects of church life.
