DESCRIPTION:We have the honor of hosting the photography of Binkley artist
Brooks de Wetter-Smith in our Sanctuary throughout the summer.  His work
is an act of meditation that witnesses the peace of the natural world amid
the chaos of what humans create. \n \n \nPHOTOGRAPHER’S STATEMENT\nC
ontemplative Photographic Exhibit\nBinkley Baptist Church\nThe exploration
of light has fascinated me since I was a very\nyoung boy sitting in my fa
ther’s darkroom\, transfixed as negative\nimages were projected with our
enlarger onto photopaper\, then\nseeing a positive image slowly emerge on
paper bathed in the\ndeveloping tray in the dimly-lit space illuminated b
 y a faint\nsafelight and accompanied by the humming\, ever-present fan. It
\nwas a time of great mystery!\nMy first camera was a simple “Brownie”
  that soon morphed into a\nreal camera\, a Kodak Signet 35. I was hooked i
n my early teens\nand that fascination evolved into the digital world of p
hotography.\nThe early forays into that world were fraught with limitation
s and\nyet filled with wonder of what might be possible. Before becoming\n
 a musician\, I was fascinated by physics and how things worked.\nDigital p
hotography fed my insatiable curiosity about this new\ntechnology.\nPhotog
raphy is about embracing a moment in time. It could be as\nbrief as 1/2000
of a second or as long as a half hour\, depending\non the light availabil
ity and the subject. Being engaged in this\npursuit is a meditative experi
ence for me. I’m not photographing\nthe frenetic pace of sports or simil
ar venues. For me\, the feeling is\none of savoring what is special and sa
cred in the moment. It is\nenhanced by lighting\, the weather and the spir
itual presence of a\nlocation. Often I am transformed by that reality.\nI
have been inspired by the unanticipated and overwhelming awe\nof being in
the presence of Mt. Everest. At another time\, I have\nbeen moved by peeri
ng into the eye of a penguin who likely has\nnever seen a human. One of th
e most humbling moments in the\nAntarctic region was playing a tiny wooden
flute while surrounded\nby several hundred thousand King penguins on Sout
h Georgia\nIsland. I was dressed in my flamboyant red parka\, they in thei
r\nformal black and white attire with iridescent yellow and orange\ncoveri
ng on their neck. Surely\, they had never heard a flute\nbefore. What woul
d they do? I played for a couple of minutes and\nwas totally ignored by al
l of God’s creatures in attendance. While\nlater photographing and filmi
ng different penguins on the\ncontinent of Antarctica in a white-out blizz
ard\, I was moved by\ntheir resilience\, their patience and their care for
  one another.\nAs a photographer\, I feel especially close to our Creator\
, in grand\nand intimate encounters. The camera forces us to slow down to\
nsee the mystery of creation. It is a means of contemplating our\nplace in
that wonder\, denying the constraints of time. I hope you\nwill sense the
awe\, the grace\, the spiritual essence that lies within\nthe embraced mo
 ment of the shutter’s release.\nBrooks de Wetter-Smith\, Photographer\nP
