Pumpkin season is coming to Binkley! Ever since the first orange nugget rolled off the truck in 2017, the Fordham Boulevard side of the Binkley grounds has been transformed each fall into a gourd-filled pumpkin-y wonderland. We line both sides of the walkway (never obstructing it) and use it as our base of operations.

Our organically grown pumpkins come from the Navajo Nation in New Mexico.
The region’s dry climate produces pumpkins of exceptional quality, while the pumpkin harvest provides seasonal—and some full-time—employment for Navajo workers. The pumpkins are supplied through Pumpkin Patch Fundraisers USA, an organization based in Greensboro. I actually stopped by after last year’s sale to say hello to our contacts, Dawn and Dana. I was astonished to find that its headquarters was a simple ranch farmhouse along a rural highway—not a tractor-trailer, or even a pumpkin, in sight!

After expenses, our share benefits Chapel Hill’s Inter-Faith Council for Social Service (IFC), our community’s leading social-service and advocacy organization.

The pumpkins arrive Saturday morning, October 10. Although we will have some hired unloaders, we need all available volunteers to help unload the truck and arrange the patch. Once the sale begins, the patch will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. six days a week and from 12:30 to 6:00 p.m. on Sundays, continuing through Halloween. After the patch closes on Halloween, any pumpkins that remain will be whisked away by local pig farmers—so nothing goes to waste.
