Relieving medical debt. Supporting our neighbors. Honoring a legacy of service and justice.

Medical debt can have devastating consequences for individuals and families—creating financial hardship, increasing anxiety, delaying needed medical care, and, in some cases, contributing to bankruptcy. The burden also falls disproportionately on Black, Hispanic, and lower-income adults.

Reflecting Binkley Baptist Church’s long history of justice ministry and care for our neighbors, we have established the Marcus McFaul Medical Debt Relief Fund to help relieve medical debt for people in Orange, Chatham, and Durham counties.

Honoring Marcus McFaul

The fund honors Rev. Dr. Marcus McFaul, Binkley’s recently retired and beloved senior pastor. During his twelve years of ministry at Binkley, Marcus preached and modeled a life of service with a deep commitment to social and racial justice.

This campaign provides an opportunity to honor that legacy through an act of generosity that can make a meaningful difference in the lives of our neighbors.

Our Goal: $10,000— With Every Gift Matched
Our initial goal is to raise $10,000.

Even better, every dollar donated will be matched dollar for dollar, up to $10,000—doubling the impact of our collective generosity.

And those dollars can go remarkably far. Through our partnership with Undue Medical Debt, donations are used to purchase qualifying medical debt in large bundles at a fraction of its original value. On average, $1 donated through Undue can erase approximately $100 of medical debt.

How Medical Debt Relief Works

Binkley is partnering with Undue Medical Debt, a national nonprofit dedicated to relieving financially burdensome medical debt.

Undue identifies qualifying debt based on financial need. Individuals generally qualify when their household income is at or below 400% of the federal poverty level or when their medical debt equals 5% or more of their annual income.

Undue purchases qualifying medical debt in bundled portfolios and then permanently erases it. Recipients do not apply for the relief, owe nothing in return, and face no tax consequences or other obligations as a result of having their debt relieved.
